Fischland-Darß-Zingst – A unique peninsula on the Baltic Sea

Fischland-Darß-Zingst is a breathtaking 45-kilometer-long peninsula that juts out into the Baltic Sea in northeastern Germany. Shaped by strong winds and changing currents, this scenic area offers wild dunes, ancient forests and the characteristic lagoon landscape known as the Bodden.

Your perfect coastal getaway

Imagine stepping out onto a sun-drenched balcony in a thatched-roof villa, where the scent of fresh pine needles and salty sea air fills the surroundings. The peninsula is a popular destination for travelers seeking relaxation and comfort in authentic maritime surroundings.

In the idyllic villages of Ahrenshoop, Prerow and Zingst, you will find modern holiday apartments side by side with traditional captain's houses. Whether you want a cozy holiday home close to the lagoon or a luxurious apartment on the beach with panoramic sea views, there are options for every type of holiday.

The history of Fischland-Darß-Zingst

Around 800 years ago, Fischland, Darß and Zingst were three separate islands. Between the 14th and 19th centuries, the locals gradually began to close off waterways and build dikes to protect the area from the sea.

A decisive moment came during the storm surge of 1872, when nature itself closed the last channel between Darß and Zingst. In 1874, the last dike was built, giving the peninsula the shape we know today.

Ahrenshoop Artists' Colony

At the end of the 19th century, the area became known for its special light conditions, which attracted many landscape painters. This led to the establishment of the famous artists' colony in Ahrenshoop, which still lives on through local galleries and museums.

Nature and wildlife

Large parts of the peninsula are part of the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park. One of the area's biggest highlights is the Darßer Weststrand – a wild and untouched beach where windswept trees grow right down to the water's edge.

A paradise for birdwatchers

Every autumn, up to 70,000 migratory cranes stop at the shallow lagoons on their journey south. This impressive natural phenomenon makes the area one of Europe's most popular birdwatching spots.

Activities on the peninsula

Fischland-Darß-Zingst is ideal for both relaxation and active holidays. The flat landscape and the many paved paths make the area perfect for cycling and hiking.

Cycling and hiking

An extensive network of cycle paths connects the villages and leads through the ancient Darß forest, where wild red deer can often be seen close to the paths.

Fresh fish and Fischbrötchen

A classic Fischbrötchen with herring, onion and remoulade is a must when visiting the area. Smoked fish such as flounder and plaice are also popular local specialities.

Sea buckthorn – “Lemon of the North”

The orange sea buckthorn berries grow along the dunes and are used in everything from cakes and jams to hot drinks and liqueurs.

Traditional meat dishes

Dishes like Mecklenburger Rippenbraten combine sweet and savory flavors with a filling of apples and prunes – a classic regional specialty.

Festivals and cultural experiences

The peninsula offers cultural events and festivals all year round that attract both locals and tourists.

Environmental photography festival “horizonte zingst”

At the end of May, Zingst is transformed into a large outdoor gallery with international photography exhibitions, workshops and installations right on the beach.
